From name search to certificate, and why your Ghana Card matters.

⏱ 5 min Lesson 2 of 3
1

Search the name

Check on the ORC portal that nobody else has your business name.

2

Fill the form

Complete the registration form for your structure and attach your Ghana Card details.

3

Pay and submit

Pay the ORC fee shown on the portal. A faster (VIP) option costs more.

4

Certificate

Keep your certificate safe — banks, MoMo merchant accounts and big customers will ask for it.

5

Renew

Renew a business name every year. The ORC accepts renewals by USSD (*222#).

📌What you need to know

  • For individuals, your Ghana Card number (PIN) is your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).
  • A company gets its own TIN when it is incorporated; use it on invoices and tax returns.
  • Registration with the ORC is not the same as registering for VAT or with your district assembly — those are separate steps.
  • Check the current fee on the ORC website before you pay; fees change.
  • Keep copies of every certificate and receipt in one folder, paper and phone.

⚠️Common mistakes

Paying an agent who never registers the name — always get the certificate in your hand.
Forgetting the yearly renewal, so the registration lapses.
Thinking ORC registration also registers you for tax or VAT.
💡
Tip. Put your registration number and TIN on your receipts. It tells customers you are a real business.
